Queensland to host Australia’s only FIVB Beach Volleyball 3 Star World Tour event in 2020
The world’s top beach volleyballers will be in action in the FIVB 3 Star World Tour Event on the Gold Coast, Queensland in 2020. This is the only FIVB beach volleyball event to be held in Australia in 2020.
The event to be staged from 13-22 March 2020 will take place on the iconic Coolangatta Beach.
The tournament will attract some of the best male and female athletes from Australia and across the world who will be looking to use the event as preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
2000 Olympics beach volleyball gold medallist, Natalie Cook, says it is a major boost for Australian teams seeking to qualify for Tokyo. “The FIVB event in Queensland is critical for our Aussie teams to gather Olympic Qualification points on the road to Tokyo. Being able to have a home event at the start of the year is a perfect opportunity to crystallize pre-season training without having to fly overseas!”
Tourism Industry Development Minister, Kate Jones, said Queensland was the best place in the world to host events.
“We’ve been in talks with Volleyball Australia to secure this event for a long time. We have a great relationship with them and they understand the value of holding their events in Queensland, where our sporting infrastructure and stunning locations make for a unique event experience,” she said.Volleyball Australia CEO, Andrew Dee, says the support of the Queensland Government has been crucial, “Without the support of the Queensland Government this event may have been lost to Australia. As was demonstrated during the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Coolangatta Beach is an iconic venue for beach volleyball.”
The event will be an important component of the Gold Coast Beach Volleyball Festival, which will also include round three of the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour, the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships, and the Australian Beach Volleyball Schools Cup.
